Off on another adventure!

23 May 2011

Up at 5 am to an overcast day that soon turned to drenching rain. Following last-minute errands, John warmed my heart with a new favorite--Starbie's new (decaf) coconut mocha.

We made several phone calls--to some of you--on the road and then cracked open our current book Blown Away by Herb Payson. We love road trips, and I read exciting books to John as he drives. This book was begun some months ago, and the only time we read is when we are in the car, so we had to finish this sailing adventure before we begin our next book.

The adventure really began for us when we turned right at Dodge Junction, rather than left to Spokane, which we have done so many times. John and I have each been to Lewiston once, at different times, so it seemed all new.

Clarkston looked pleasant, but we were really fascinated to cross the bridge to Lewiston, where it seemed the whole energy changed. We drove one-way down the main street heading east and were delighted with what appeared to be a thriving downtown area with colorful brick shop fronts and fully-leafed dark green deciduous trees.

We followed the Nez Perce trail, or the Lewis & Clark trail (albeit in reverse), however you choose to refer to it. We stopped at all the historic signs, tracing their progress, and reading of all the ways the Nez Perce helped them on their journey to the Pacific.

Just before we got to the surprise John promised, we noticed a thunking sound, which threatens to be a complaining U-joint. Alas!

Nevertheless, we had our surprise, when Lolo Hot Springs loomed large before our faces. We had a heavenly dip in the azure waters, a terrific day's end for travelers. We secured a camp ground parking spot, and thus ends our first day.

Long live adventure!!
